Jolly Boy Kannada Movie Review

Jolly Boy is a remake of a Tamil film named Pathiaaru. D. Sabapathy, who wrote and directed the original, has done the same here in Kannada, which means we will get to see a lot of Tamil nativity in Jolly Boy too. To be fair to Sabapathy, he has a really good sense of composing the frames and establishing the mood in the scenes. But he too cannot stop himself from dishing out some Jolly good lectures about love and life in general. And of course, it’s an elevated experience when you hear it from ‘artists’ like Faisal, who simply cannot act, who hogs the limelight for a Jolly good part of the film!

Diganth loves Rekha, which infuriates Rekha’s father Devaraj and makes him remember his failed love in his younger days, when he was roaming around in his Chaddi. Too bad that his love fails, as the girl grows up to be Sudha Rani, the only woman in Kannada industry who has discovered the secret of reverse ageing process, and who is grossly underutilized by our filmmakers. Diganth and Rekha realize their mistake (no, we are not talking about signing this film) and decide to finish off their studies first before they start coochie cooing once again.
And so, the film that should have ideally been over by the interval time drags for another hour, and in spite of its well shot songs and some beautifully narrated sequences, is a big bore. While Diganth and Rekha make guest appearances in their own film, Devaraj and Sudha Rani sizzle with fine performances even with their limited scope. Faisal is unimpressive, but Archana steals the show. The director has removed makeup from her face and made way for some extreme emotions, which the girl carries with dignity. May be we need to see more of her in Kannada in the coming days.
