Wimbledon 2011: Serena Williams knocked out by Marion Bartoli in straight sets
A year of calamity for Serena Williams ended with the biggest blow of all as she slumped to a straight sets 6-4, 7-6 defeat to 26 year old Marion Bartoli in just under two hours.


Williams has survived a clot on her lungs, a gashed foot and a high-speed fall from her bicycle but even though she managed to save four match points against Bartoli, the defending champion could not hold out against her irrepressible opponent.
It was the four time champion’s first defeat at Wimbledon in almost three years, only her eight defeat ever at Wimbledon in 12 years and her earliest exit at Wimbledon since a third round loss in 2005.
